Degree Overview
History Major: Thirty-six (36) credits in History: twelve (12) credits in 100-level courses; twelve (12) credits in 200-level courses; twelve (12) credits in 300-level courses. Of those 36 credits: 1 course (4 credits) in each of the three geographical areas offered (Africa, Americas, Europe), and 1 course (4 credits) in premodern history (any class with the majority of content pre-1500 CE)
History Minor: 20 credits in History: two courses at the 100/200 level; two courses at the 300/400 level; and another course at any level
Certification for Teaching in History Students interested in pursuing a course of study leading to a license to teach history (integrated social studies for grades 7-12), are required to take HIST 106, 121 and either 122 or 127. All other history degree requirements remain the same. For additional requirements (education courses and related area courses), please contact your advisor in either the History or Education Departments.
Required Tools of the Trade:
All majors are required to own a copy of the latest edition of Kate L. Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. All upper-level classes require students to use Chicago Manual of Style (footnote/endnote form) for paper citation.
Major in History

* Degree also requires attendance at 5 (five) History Department Colloquia
Notes:
- Courses can count for multiple categories (HIST 311: Viking World is both a 300-level class and a premodern class)
- Honors students can complete a 1 or 2 semester (for variable credit) Honors Thesis which would count for History Major credit
- HIST seniors will present one of their 300-level papers at a Spring Symposium which will act as a capstone experience for the major.
Minor in History
20 credits, with 2.0 GPA in history, taken with approval of department advisor
- At least eight HIST credits taken at the 100/200 level
- At least eight HIST credits taken at the 300/400 level
- Courses chosen with the approval of a departmental advisor
